410 410 Gone

The resource has been permanently removed and will not return.

When you'll see it

When a page has been removed on purpose and won't come back: a discontinued product or a deleted account page.

What to check

  • The difference from 404: 410 says clearly that the removal is intended, and search engines may drop the URL slightly sooner.
  • That there's no good replacement. If there is, a 301 to it serves visitors better.
  • That nothing on the site still links to the URL.

Example response

HTTP/1.1 410 Gone
Content-Type: text/html; charset=utf-8

SEO impact

A stronger signal than 404. Google deindexes 410 pages faster. Use it when you deliberately remove a page with no replacement.
