308 308 Permanent Redirect
Like 301, but the request method must not change.
When you'll see it
When a URL has moved for good and the request method must not change, for example an API endpoint that gets a new address but must keep receiving POST requests.
What to check
- The difference from 301: with a 308, a POST stays a POST, while many clients turn it into a GET after a 301.
- That your API clients follow it. Very old clients may not know the code.
- For normal web pages either works, and search engines treat 308 as a permanent redirect like 301.
Example response
HTTP/1.1 308 Permanent Redirect
Location: https://api.example.com/v2/ordersSEO impact
Same SEO behavior as 301. Google treats it as a permanent redirect and passes link equity.
